Kinky’s Offensive Views on Immigration

Kinky continues to offend with his right-wing comments on immigration.

When asked about the immigration debate, Kinky said "Mexico is not a poor country...all of these politicians are afraid of offending Hispanics. I want the border off the evening news until we get something resolved." Kinky's comments were published in the April 23 edition of the Texarkana Gazette.

These comments echo Kinky's previous comments published in the April 18 edition of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where Kinky said "I'm taking a harder line on immigration." Kinky further explained his view that the immigration protest marchers were "half playing hooky" before he once again suggested that Texas leaders are "too afraid to offend anyone" to make decisions about the "scads of illegal Mexicans" in Texas.

Later last week, Kinky spoke at Baylor University to further discuss his immigration plan. The April 27 edition of the Baylor newspaper reported on Kinky's plan:

"His strategy for border patrol is called Five Mexican Generals. He said five Mexican generals would divide the border into five pieces and would be paid to protect the border. But if an immigrant crossed the border illegally, they would lose $5,000 from their payment."

Finally, it is unclear if Kinky still backs his prior policy statements that, as governor of Texas, he would support the building of a wall along the Texas-Mexico border

His strategy is stupid..but I agree with his rhetoric on this issue.

Someone needs to be done, and many politicians dont have the guts to fix the problem

Which part of Kinky’s rhetoric do you agree with?

Do you agree that Mexico is not a poor country? Statistics generally confirm stratospheric poverty levels in Mexico, but even those grim statistics grossly understate the problem because the quasi-industrialization of northern Mexico masks the truly crushing poverty that dominates the southern half of Mexico, which is among the poorest regions in entire world. Also, across the whole country, Mexican citizens have a very high infant mortality rate and a very low life expectancy (two leading indicators of poverty) as a result of the fact that Mexico spends about 1/25 as much per capita on public health as the US.

Do you agree that many politicians are moderating their comments on immigration out of a fear of offending Hispanics? If so, can you name three politicians to whom you think this applies? From what I gather, most politicians aren’t particularly deferential to “Hispanic” views on immigration (which are not even close to uniform among “Hispanics” and so Kinky’s thinking on the matter is premised on a stereotype, but that’s another issue). Among the minority of politicians who espouse views in immigration which the “Hispanics” presumably support, I see nothing which indicates that this minority view is based on pandering to Hispanics rather than based on the politicians’ sincere desire to promote what they believe to be a better immigration policy. What evidence is there that these supposedly "Hispanic-pandering" politicians are acting out of a fear of offending Hispanics?

Do you agree with Kinky's rhetoric that half the immigration protest marchers were merely "playing hooky"? If you agree, I’d be grateful to see anything which supports that conclusion. If this is not one of Kinky’s statements with which you agree, may I assume you and I agree Kinky’s statement that half the protest marchers were just playing hooky would be offensive to the protest marchers?

Finally, do you agree with Kinky’s rhetoric with regard to his “Five Mexican Generals” scheme to outsource our Texas-Mexico border security to a foreign military paid by us on a contingency fee? If so, do you really think such border schemes are the business of the state governments and not the federal government? Further, if you agree with Kinky’s “Five Mexican Generals” rhetoric, were you also among the minority of people who saw no security risk in allowing a United Arab Emirates company to control our ports?

In many areas, you seem to have a firm grasp on the issues so I am curious about your views on Kinky’s immigration rhetoric. Please let me know which of aspects of Kinky’s rhetoric on immigration you agree with so we can specifically focus on those particular issues.

Read the Dallas Article I just linked to on my site.

Politicians are being very careful on this issue.

I agree firmy with the House plan, and feel politicians like McCain, Kennedy and others are scared of a backlash

I read the article on your blog. It was interesting, but I'm not sure how your comment follows from the article.

You name McCain and Kennedy as among those who are scared of a backlash from Hispanic voters.

I'm not a huge McCain fan, but I wouldn't have thought that he'd be the first name I choose when making a list of gutless pandering politicians; he seems to relish defying conventional Republican wisdom regardless of the possible backlash.

With respect to Kennedy, it seems ridiculous to suggest that his views on immigration are based on pandering to Hispanics. First, Kennedy is among the least vulnerable Senators so he need not pander to protect his political future. Second, Massachusetts has a small percentage of Hispanic voters so pandering to Hispanic voters would hardly gain Kennedy any political advantage. Finally, Kennedy's views on immigration have been progressive since long before the issue was a hot button topic. What in the world would lead you to conclude that his views are insincere?
