Kinky and Punishment by "Negro" - See the Video

On a November 8, 2005, Kinky appeared on a nationally televised CNBC news program, where he was asked about his views on criminal punishment. Kinky replied, "Throw 'em in prison and throw away the key, and make 'em listen to a Negro talking to himself." When asked whether his use of the word "Negro" was racist, Kinky replied "no ... it's a charming word."

I can't believe how upset Democrats are getting over him using the word "negro" in a joke. The word "negro" isn't racist. It's anachronistic and politically incorrect and that why he used it for comedic effect. I'm a liberal person, definately not a racist and I thought it was funny. It's actually a line from one of his books.

It's too bad you didn't have the whole interview and just showed what he said out of context. I would like to see it all.

I'm voting Democratic all though the ticket except for Governor. Kinky is my man.

If you are a liberal person, as you say, what is it about Kinky's candidacy that draws you to him?

Is it his vote for Bush/Cheney in '04?

Is it the dissolution of the boundary between church and state in public schools?

Is it Kinky’s prior political campaign as a Republican?

Is it his unwillingness to say whether he supports reproductive freedom?

I’ll tell you why Greens and Democrats and Libertarians are upset by Kinky’s candidacy: it’s because he’s directing his campaign at liberal and pro-civil rights voters who are unfamiliar with his actual position on issues – which are not actually liberal or in favor of civil rights.

In some contexts, the word "Negro" might not be racist, but when someone says we shoudl punish criminals by making them "listen to a Negro talking to himself," that's offensive and racist. If you don't get that, you are either not a liberal as you claim or you are a white liberal who has no empathy for minorities.

stop kinky..

your third comment was remarkable...and very, very true.

He has tried to reinvent himself as some peace to all, tree hugger...when he is anything but.

And what real Texan is a tree hugger? I find Kinky authentic. And that's probably what bugs all you folks who want to label yourselves. Shesh! Get a life! The Kinkster's got my vote -- negro or not!

Um, what about the United Negro College Fund?

Does that offend your oh-so-liberal/progressive-belly?

Nope, didn't think so. There's nothing wrong with negro. It's purely descriptive. It is anachronistic.

"listening to a negro talking to himself" at least acknowledges the fact that there are a disproportionate number of negros in prison. Hello! Thanks for remembering. And as far as the death penalty thing goes -- I line up with the Kinkster -- they killed the wrong Christian 2000 years ago - why make the same mistake. Death is something the state just can't take back.

Damn. Don't know what crawled up your butt. Are you even from Texas?

To those who don't find the term "Negro" offensive, I don't think I could address the Kinky interview better than this comment (from anonymous):

"In some contexts, the word "Negro" might not be racist, but when someone says we shoudl punish criminals by making them "listen to a Negro talking to himself," that's offensive and racist...."

Kinky's comment would be offensive even if he had said we should punish criminals by throwing them in prison "and make 'em listen to an African-American talking to himself."

Why is it punishment to be forced to listen to a "Negro talking to himself" in prison and not an Anglo talking to himself, or a Baptist, or a Jew?

Would anyone doubt I was slamming Kinky if I said we should punish criminals by throwing them in prison and make 'em listen to Kinky talking to himself? Of course not. In the same way, kinky's comment is a racial insult.

When you are in the context of making a racially insulting statement, then use of the word "Negro" is not "charming" as Kinky says.

...throwing them in prison and make 'em listen to Kinky talking to himself?

Now that's what I call cruel and unusual punishment.

First... there are better ways of acknowledging the disproprtionate amount of African Americans in jail than pointing out that listening to one of them talk to himself would be adequate punishment for a crime. It's not the referent or connotations of Negro that is racist in his sentence, but rather the way he charactarizes black people. Anyhow, you say you stand with Kinky on the Death Penalty issue... did you flip flop when he did? At the beginning of his campaign he claimed he was merely against 'the wrong guy getting executed,' not against the death penalty. Semantics? No, there's a difference, if he were able to prove with greater accuracy the guilt of someone, he would have them executed. It was not until very recently that changed his opinion. I'd challenge you to not get sucked into holding onto one candidate because you've already made a decision-- to be more impartial, and then see if Kinky is really the candidate you (and I, at one point) thought he was.

This is ridiculous, he's not a racist. You people are just totally uptight and humorless. His "negro" comment/attempted joke was awkward to say the least, mainly just un-PC, but usually I think he's very witty. I think he was referring to a line from one of his books:

"As a general rule of thumb, however, if you thought of New York as a Negro talking to himself and of California as a VCR with nothing to put in, you wouldn't be too far off the mark."

(1993), A case of Lone Star. New York (Wings Books), 379

Is that racist, or just weird? I thought it was funny.

From Wikipedia:

Music career

Friedman formed his band, The Texas Jewboys, in the early 1970s. Friedman's father objected to the name of the band, calling it a "negative, hostile, peculiar thing."

Arriving on the wave of country rock following on from Gram Parsons, The Band and Eagles, Friedman originally found cult fame as a country and western singer. His repertoire mixed social commentary ("We Reserve The Right To Refuse Service To You") and maudlin ballads ("Western Union Wire") with raucous humor (such as "Get Your Biscuits In The Oven and Your Buns In Bed"). His "Ride'em Jewboy" was an extended tribute to the victims of the Holocaust.

He confronted racism and anti-Semitism head-on in the song, "They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore," a song in which the fictitious Kinky verbally and physically beats up a drunken White racist who berates African Americans, Jews, Greeks and Sigma Nu's in a bar.

Sample lyrics: "You know, you don't look Jewish, near as I can figger, I had you lamped for a slightly anemic well-dressed country nigger!"
and "Oh, they ain't makin' Jews like Jesus anymore, They ain't makin' carpenters that know what nails are for"

You say Kinky is not a racist. How do you know that?

The word racist means discriminating on the basis of race.

Now, let's review how Kinky suggested we should punish criminals: "Throw 'em in prison and throw away the key, and make 'em listen to a Negro talking to himself."

On what basis does Kinky think it is punishment to be forced to listen to a "Negro talking to himself" as opposed to, for example, an Anglo talking to himself or an Asian talking to himself? The basis is racial.

How can you dispute Kinky's statement that it is punishment to be forced to listen to a "Negro taking to himself" is not discriminating on the basis of race?

I've been Black all my life. I've always considered "Negro" to be polite for the N-word which I find so offensive I can't even write or say it. "African-American" is slightly less offensive but not by much. I see mayself as an American Black man. What Kinky said has noithing to do with Black folk or even African-Americans. Now I guess all the Negroes in the world ought to be offended.

If Kinky is such a racist, how do you explain all the time he spent picketing segregated restaurants in Austin to integrate them?
